Check your engine mounts.

The symptoms of failed engine mounts can include:
Difficult gear selection.

This shows where the mounts are located each side of the engine:

But they are very easy to check. The easiest way is with a small camera e.g. your mobile phone camera. Access is through the wheel arch behind the wheel, reach in about an arms length and take a picture looking to wards the front of the car. You should see something like this.

This shows the mount on the passenger side of my car, it's worn but still has life in it. The next picture shows the drivers side:

As you can see, there is a much smaller gap at the top and this mount doesn't have long left at all. It's quite common for the drivers side to fail first due to heat from the exhaust so be careful photographing that if the car is still warm.

After changing the mounts this is what the drivers side looks like:
